THUG Devlin Sharpe has been jailed – after attacking a 14-year-old boy with a tree branch on his way home from school. The 27-year-old hit the youth round the back of the head which caused him to momentarily black out. And he also assaulted a man on the same day and attacked two paramedics who went to his aid days later. Now Sharpe, of Myott Avenue, Newcastle, has been locked up for 10 weeks at North Staffordshire Justice Centre. Sue Hayers, prosecuting, said the teenager had been...

FLY-TIPPERS will be invited to own up to their crime without fear of prosecution as part of a new council crackdown. Cheshire East Council is planning a fly-tipping amnesty giving offenders – and their victims – the chance to come forward and talk about the problem 'openly and honestly'. Council leaders hope this will help them understand and tackle the issue without the need for heavy fines and prosecutions. Around 250 incidents of fly-tipping are reported to the authority...

WE like to think this country is different. When we see the horrific images of yet another massacre in the U.S., we at least take consolation that such a thing could never happen here. A person with a twisted desire to kill and maim could never just walk into a store, hand over their cash, and wreak carnage. But the idea we live in a gun-free society is flawed. 'One could be forgiven for suddenly not feeling quite so safe...' Government statistics show that, at the last count, there are...

The winger will line up against Romania this afternoon carrying an extra 3kg in muscle than when he joined Stoke from Inter Milan late last summer. The 24-year-old, who weighs in at 11st 8lb now, believes that the physical challenge of the Premier League is even greater than international football. TEENAGE hero Jake Pettifer has been praised for saving the life of a two-year-old girl after a blaze broke out at his neighbour's home in the middle of the night. The 19-year-old scaffolder sprang into action after hearing an alarm going off and seeing a man with a baby coming out of the house through a cloud of smoke. He then bravely risked his own life to rescue the man's wife and two-year-old daughter who were still inside the Crackley house after becoming disorientated by the...

DARIO Gradi believes Jamie Vardy's one-time £100,000 price tag is enough to show how bouncing back from relegation is getting harder all the time. Crewe twice shied away from buying Vardy, first following a trial while he was still with Stocksbridge Park Steels and then again when he was banging in goals for Halifax. It was his off-the-pitch record that ultimately persuaded the Alex not to meet their six-figure valuation. Yet just five years on, the striker is with England at Euro...

TWO quick-thinking members of the public teamed up with police and paramedics to save a man's life after he collapsed in a town centre. They sprang into action after the 56-year-old was taken ill in Tower Square, Tunstall. The man, who has not been named, last night remained in a 'stable' condition at the Royal Stoke University Hospital. The drama unfolded last Thursday afternoon when Tracy Stockdale – who was eating her lunch in Tower Square – saw the man had collapsed. The...

XHERDAN Shaqiri has all-but booked his place in the Euro 2016 knock-out stages after helping Switzerland to a 1-1 draw with Romania. The Swiss knew avoiding defeat on the back of an opening game win over Albania would give them a foot in the last 16 with one group match remaining. But they had to fight back after going behind to a Bogdan Stancu penalty in the 18th minute when Stephan Lichtsteiner was penalised for tugging Alex Chipciu's shirt. Stoke City winger Shaqiri produced a couple of...

STOKE City's first four games of the new season give an indicator of the strength of the Premier League, says Tony Scholes. The Potters will launch their 2016/17 campaign at Middlesbrough on Saturday, August 13 before welcoming Manchester City as the first club to the re-branded bet365 Stadium a week later. A trip to Everton on August 27 is followed by a home game against last season's title challengers Tottenham Hotspur on September 10. It is enough to make the most optimistic fan gulp,...

I THINK England will beat Wales tomorrow, but I can see it being a cagey game.I would love to see England really have a go at teams, but I can see them setting up fairly defensively with the attitude of making sure they don't lose. That's probably been England's problem in major tournaments over the years. I think teams would fear them if they went all out attack but I can't see it happening. Premier League transfer gossip: West Ham could challenge Stoke City for Saido BerahinoI still fancy...

TONY Scholes says crowd violence at Euro 2016 is a reminder that Stoke City must always keep hooliganism in the dark and distant past. England play their second game of the tournament this afternoon against Wales (2pm) after a first week in France which has been dogged by bad headlines. Supporters were caught up in trouble involving Russian ultras and locals in Marseille which led to the FA being given a warning about potential disqualification. DARIO Gradi says Crewe Alexandra old boy Nick Powell might have to find a new role to rebuild his career away from Manchester United. Powell is unattached this summer after four difficult years at Old Trafford, having burst on to the senior scene with a spattering of wonder goals as he guided the Alex to promotion from League Two. He was tipped for a trajectory similar to Dele Alli on the road to Premier League stardom, but instead a succession of serious knee and hamstring injuries have...

WHEN visiting Tilewright Close, you can be left in no doubt who the residents are supporting at this year's European Championships. All 20 houses and lampposts in the Kidsgrove street are adorned with 200 England flags as the neighbours have come together to get behind Roy Hodgson's men. What had started as just a few flags two years ago during the World Cup in Brazil has now escalated to the point where visitors to the cul-de-sac are hit with a wave of red and white. And not only do the...
